You’re thinking to yourself what does the slice of Hawaii has to do with the tropical weather in South Florida but we’re not. Welcome to Aloha Tatu located at 4430 SE Federal Highway in Stuart. The welcoming feeling you get when you walk into the shop for the first time gives you an inviting feeling you won’t find in most shops. Another Tattoo caught up with shop owner and tattoo artist Chris Mckevitt to discuss his shop and what sets it apart from all the rest. If you don’t know who Chris Mckevitt is, he is a self-taught artist who started at the age of 15 on Long Island, NY. This was during a period in history when tattoo shops were illegal in NYC and you could only find legal shops on the island. Don’t get me wrong there were many back door shops operating throughout the Five Boroughs of NYC which operated with a “blind eye” of the police department. They wanted their tattoos too and since it was considered a Health Department Issue and not a criminal offense they would just look the other way. Austin Weiss – Custom Fabricator and Tattoo Collector
Many people know Austin Weiss as a custom fabricator; turning cars, trucks and motorcycles into works of art. He has appeared in American Iron Magazine for his work. He has built motorcycles for Anheuser-Busch (Bud Light), Krieger Watch Company and Will.i.am (from the Black Eye Peas). He has just completed “The Zombie Jeep” for one of his clients in Texas.
Here are some pictures of his work:
Another Tattoo: What project are you currently working on?
Austin: I have been asked by the Smithsonian to restore one of Hitler’s personal cars. Adolf Hitler was one the worst men to walk the face of the planet. Ordered the Killing of all Jews because of religion and half my family was erased by the gas chambers. This is why 16 blue eyed skulls with Family is tattooed on my entire right arm. Now, a tattooed messianic Jewish boy is restoring one of his limousines for a museum, for history to see and never forget what he did. “Arbeit Macht Frei” was what the gates of Auschwitz said when my family walked through after unloading off the trains. That means “work will set you free.” Well, 70 plus years later I fulfilled that for all men and women whose loved ones were lost to an evil man’s sick dreams of an Aryan race… Guess he forgot about Karma. One tree can make a million match sticks, but it only takes one match to burn the entire forest down! Continue reading Austin Weiss – Custom Fabricator and Tattoo Collector→
Recently moved and new to town? Need to find a shop? With tattoo shops popping up on every corner in America, how do you find what shop is the best for your needs? Another Tattoo caught up with Daron James owner and piercer of Diamond Thieves Body Piercing & Tattoo. They have two locations in Asheville and Marion, NC to serve all your needs.
Here is what he had to say:
I know personally from moving around a lot from state to state the best way to find a new shop or artist is by word of mouth. Most collectors love to show off their ink and will give referrals to local shops.
Back in the day “Google” was a great source but recently other shops have used it as a weapon to publicly slander other shops and try to paint a bad picture of them. These days I would say find a local magazine (i.e.. mountain express) check their website for who has been voted number 1 or even for ads ran by local shops. Usually, legit shops are the only ones who have a strong enough clientele to afford legit advertising. Look at shops websites! Usually, all the artists at that shop have their work on their sites be sure to match that work with their in-house portfolios to make sure they are not stealing others photos. All in all though yes , word of mouth is the best form of advertising , always will be. Continue reading Need to find a shop?→
