Kevin Marr Horikema
In this week’s Artist Spotlight we caught up with Kevin Marr Horikema of Godspeed Tattoo in San Mateo, California. Kevin has been tattooing since the late 90’s mastering the style Japanese tattoos.
You have been tattooing since 1999, way before tattoos became socially acceptable; what is your thoughts on the change in perception on tattoos and tattoos as art?
I feel like there’s been a huge shift. The change was just beginning when I got into the business thanks to a lot of the very progressive tattooing that was happening in the mid 90’s in San Francisco. Now that it’s acceptable, we have more serious clientele, and lots of amazing tattooers. My clients are getting full sleeves and full back pieces as their first tattoo. Back in the day it would blow my mind when someone wanted a full sleeve as a first tattoo, now it’s no big deal.
