The Beginning

Mike’s career started in the early 1990’s. Mike’s passion for art started as a child when he would doodle endlessly at his mother’s kitchen table in Long Island. At age 17, Mike’s passion brought him to Da Vinci Tattoo, where he served an extensive apprenticeship under Frank Romano. Mike continued honing his skills from 1995 to 2005, splitting time between Da Vinci’s Tattoo in Long Island and part time on the lower east side, NYC. Mike’s breakthrough moment came when he was tattooed by the legendary Filip Leu in 1997. It was during his marathon sessions in Switzerland that Mike began to see what was possible in the realm of tattoos. It was also during this time that Mike befriended world-class Danish tattoo artist Henning Jorgensen. Together, they set out to bring attention to the industry’s leading artists and take the industry to the next level. They did this by starting Tattoo Elite International in 2003 in which they would eventually sell in 2012.

In 2005, Mike opened Kings Avenue Tattoo in his hometown of Massapequa, NY. Starting with only three artists, including himself, the shop’s fame quickly spread both locally and across the world. He soon opened a second location in Manhattan to meet the increasing demand. Kings Avenue Tattoo currently employs 13 industry-leading artists and now serves clients and avid collectors from across the globe. Style

Although immensely skilled and well versed in all styles, Mike is especially sought after for his highly stylized renditions of traditional Japanese irezumi. Mike has always been struck by the beauty, simplicity, and powerful imagery of Japanese iconography. He constantly explores the boundaries of this medium. Mike spends countless hours researching, designing, and drawing his custom designs for clients before he even touches a client’s skin. For Mike, the client and creating the perfect tattoo for that client come first before anything else. It is Mike’s dedication to his craft and the end result that have clients waiting for well over two years to sit in his chair.

Popular Culture

Mike’s masterful talents have exposed him to the public eye. In 2007, Mike was featured on the TLC series Tattoo Wars, where he defeated iconic tattoo master Pascal “Bugs” Jarrion . That same year, New York Magazine ranked Mike as one of New York City’s top tattoo artists. In 2012, Mike was prominently featured in Vice Magazine’s original documentary series “Tattoo Age.” Mike has also appeared as a guest judge in seasons 2, 5, and 6 of Spike TV’s highly-rated program “Ink Master.” Mike continues to give back to the tattoo community, which has given so much to him.

Business Ventures

Mike’s success with a needle has expanded to a recently launched collaboration with New Era, which has debuted Mike’s line of branded hats. Mike was also a featured artist in the documentary “Skin” which was a project for Garage Magazine. This featured Mike along with Damien Hurst, Jeff Koons, and Raymond Pettibon. Mike was also featured by The Huffington Post as one of the fifteen tattoo artists to follow on Instagram. His extensive knowledge and expertise earned him the distinction of guest editor / cover feature for Freshly Inked, an industry leading publication. In 2014/15, Mike had a 12-page spread and was interviewed in issue #19 of HEY MAGAZINE: Modern Art & Pop Culture in France. The magazine features a wide variety of artwork from some of the top artists around the world. He continues to break barriers between tattooing and the fine art world as a featured artist in “TIME: Tattoo Art Today ‘The Somerset House Project”’ exhibit, where the original “Mother Pelican” was displayed. In April 2015, Kings Avenue Tattoo hosted “Pictures of the Gone World:” Ed Hardy’s return to the Bowery. This was an unprecedented 3-day historical event.

In addition, Mike and fellow artist Matt Beckerich recently started their own publishing company “Neversleep.” They plan to release in Spring 2016 their first publication Cor Mysterium; a tattoo encyclopedia featuring 180 of the world’s best artists.
