Guy Waisman of Wooster Street Social Club NYC

Guy Waisman This weeks Artist Spotlight is on Guy Waisman of Wooster Street Social Club located in the SOHO section of NYC.  Guy is a very talented artist who loves to work in black and gray; which includes “dot” tattooing and small intricate work.

We caught up with Guy for an interview:

AnoTat2:  How long have you been tattooing for?Guy Waisman Tattoo

Guy:  I have been tattooing for about 10 years.

AnoTat2:  How old were you when you got your first tattoo?  What was it?

Guy:  I got my first tattoo when I was 16; it was a small black skull with black flames at the top.

Guy Waisman TattooAnoTat2:  Any story behind it?

Guy:  There is no story behind it; I was a heavy metal music guy that’s what got me to like tattoos.

AnoTat2:  Did you always want to be a tattoo artist?

Guy:  I wanted to be a tattoo artist right after I got my first tattoo.

AnoTat2:  When you were starting out who did you do your apprenticeship with?

Guy:  I started experimenting with tattooing on my own at the age of 17, but needless to say it didn’tGuy Waisman Tattoo go very well. I got a position at a local shop in Tel Aviv, but it wasn’t leading me in the right direction. Finally, I got a job at Psycho Tattoo, which is known as the best shop in Tel Aviv and in Israel. Which led to my apprenticeship under Avi Vanunu, who also did my first tattoo. It was a long time until I really started tattooing, maybe 5 or 6 years.

AnoTat2:  How do you feel apprenticeships have changed over the years?

Guy:  I do feel that apprenticeships have changed over the years. Maybe today it’s easier to be a tattoo artist, but I also think it’s easier to be a musician or photographer. I don’t think that it always has to be hard and frustrating to learn something new, and there’s not only one-way to go about it.

“If you really want to do it, you will find your way, any way….”

Guy Waisman TattooAnoTat2:  What artist(s) have influenced you and your work over the years?

Guy:  My biggest influences so far are; my teacher Avi Vanunu, Claus Furman and Xed le’Head. These three individuals have inspired me since the beginning and continue to today. There are too many artists who inspire me to list.

AnoTat2:  We see from your website you do a lot of Black and Grey along with very small details, what is your favorite style to do?

Guy:  Right, my favorite styles are black and gray and dot work. From time to time, I also like to play with photorealism.

AnoTat2:  Any type(s) of tattoos you don’t like doing?Guy Waisman Tattoo

Guy:  Color new school tattoos are not my thing, but I always find it amazing to see what other people can do.

AnoTat2:  You currently tattoo at Wooster Street Social Club in NYC, did you know the other artists there before working at WSSC?

Guy:  Yes, I used to work at Love Hate in Miami Beach before I moved to New York. So, I met most of them when I was down there.

Guy Waisman TattooAnoTat2:  I understand that you are from Tel Aviv, Israel; how was it to adjust to working in the states?

Guy:  There really was no adjustment. The Tel Aviv tattoo scene is no different from any other tattoo scene. It’s the same everywhere you go, just different languages.

AnoTat2:  Have you ever refused to do a tattoo on someone, whether attitude or design?

Guy:  I’ve only refused services if the person is obviously drunk or high. I can always find a way to work on the design, and attitude is a personal opinion.

AnoTat2:  What do you like doing to unwind?Guy Waisman

Guy:  When I’m not tattooing. I’m playing guitar, studying music and making music.

AnoTat2:  Do you attend any tattoo shows or conventions?

Guy:  I used to go to a lot of conventions in the past, but not right now. This may change soon; I just haven’t had the time to travel.

AnoTat2:  What can we expect to see from you in the future?

Guy:  More tattoos. Exploring what I can do with the styles I like.

If you want to make an appointment with Guy make sure you call the shop.  Guy also is available for  walk-in appointments.
