Florida Road Trip Part 2 – Jeff Covell, Twisted Image Tattoos

Florida Road Trip Part 2 – Jeff Covell, Twisted Image Tattoos

Twisted Image TattooNo trip would be complete to Florida without stopping at our friend Jeff Covell’s shop, Twisted Image Tattoos in Port ST Lucie, FL.  Jeff has been a featured artist on our “Spotlight Artist” series that we have been doing for several months. If you are not familiar with Jeff’s work on and off skin do yourself a favor and read our interview with him here.  Jeff and Hollie, his wife runs two of the most successful tattoo shops on the Treasure Coast.

Jeff’s mission on this trip was to give new life to a pinup tattoo I got back in 2009.  There were some details and shading that needed some much-needed attention.  As Jeff set up for the appointment I noticed he was not using the traditional coil tattoo machine but a rotary from Neo Tat.  I have to say with all the different shops and artists I have been in front of this was my first experience with a rotary.  I have to say it was quite, too quite at times I thought it was off.  At first, I missed the “sound” of a good coil machine but as the work went on for a few hours I quickly forget it.

I always have found it interesting and a bit cool how the artists set up the inks they will be using for the tattoo.  It’s amazing to see how the palette they chose for the piece transforms into a work of art.

Here are some pictures of the work on my pinup went down.

I have to admit there were some reservations about getting this piece worked on to “fix” and give it new life but Jeff quickly put my mind at ease.  He explained exactly what he was planning on doing and how it would look when completed.  Even Faith Helvey (Pictured above) looked on as he turned an OK tattoo into the vibrant pinup I had envisioned. Here are the final results:

As you can see the missing details were added and the much need shading.  Of course, while I was sitting in the shop I wanted to get a new tattoo as well.  For awhile I have wanted to get a traditional Lucky 13 tattoo since I have always found the number 13 to be lucky for me; for example is in 2013 I launched my idea for Another Tattoo.  This has lead me and my family to meet such amazing people along the way.

Here are some pictures of the old school Lucky 13 Tattoo:

I have always admired the more tradition tattoos and Jeff nailed what I wanted.  Using an older style tattoo font he was able to pull off what I had asked for.

Florida Road Trip Part 1 – Austin Weiss, The Garage Inc

Florida Road Trip Part 1 – Austin Weiss, The Garage Inc

Austin WeissOur Florida road trip started out with a visit to Austin Weiss at the famous – The Garage, Inc.  If you have been following our site for a while you will remember our first “Special Edition” article on Austin (Click here) back in February.  To sum up it; Austin is first a family man, custom fabricator, gun and of course tattoo collector.

When we first arrived at the shop we were greeted by Melissa, Austin’s sister and Executive Assistant. Not only

Melissa, Chris & Tommy

does she run the day to day operations with Austin she also prints all the tee-shirts orders. That’s right they have an onsite “Print to Garment” printer in which they use to fulfill the orders.

Austin WeissAs you enter the shop you are surrounded by art – art on the wall in the form of graffiti to the mechanical works of art. Like the “Grind Hard & Stay Humble, ” custom built a motorcycle. Which is for sale if anyone is interested in it. (see contact information on the bottom of the article – only serious inquiries please)

These pictures don’t do this bike justice at all, to see this in person, to see the detail and work that went intoGrind Hard Stay Humble creating this bike was amazing.

In the front, they were also working on two custom saddle bags for a new project.  You will be able to see the progress of this one by following them on either Instagram or Facebook.Austin Weiss Custom Built

If you have read the two previous articles you would know one of his more recent projects was the Zombie Jeep, which was built for one of Austin’s customers in Texas.  We were lucky enough to see this Jeep as it was back having even more accessories added to it.  Here are some of the pictures. (please note that to complete Jeep is coated with a spray on Kevlar to make it bullet proof)Zombie Jeep

The shop itself is a work of art from the custom graffiti on the walls to the personal barber shop upstairs.  Check out these snapshots of the shop (See gallery below)

Chris, Tommy & AustinWe want to thank Austin, Melissa and the rest of The Garage Inc staff for the hospitality and taking the time out of their busy schedule to show us around the shop and talk to us about his current projects.
